A Cute Anime that'll have your Inner "Fanboy" or "Fangirl" Squealing "KAWAII!"
I just got finished watching both seasons of Dog Days last night, and I was very surprised by how good it was. The first season was a marvelously cute anime that managed to combine plot, adorable characters, and surprisingly (or maybe not, this is anime after all), ecchi fanservices.
And now that I've gotten your attention with the picture above, let's talk about the anime itself.
Dog Days is about a young boy named Shinku Izumi who is summoned to the world of Flognarde by the ever adorable Princess of the Kingdom of Biscotti, with the purpose to raise funds for the Kingdoms involved, where the winner faction claims a larger sum than the losing side.
Princess Millhiore, who often goes by the nickname Millhi by her friends, has summoned Shinku to help her win the war against the Gallete Lion Territory. Shinku agrees, and with his help the Biscotti Republic wins it's first victory over Gallete. Of course, after the battle he learns that those who are summoned to Flognard can never return home. Fortunately for him, the scientists of Biscotti have promised to find a way for him to return him in 16 days, which is when school starts up again.
Shinku Izumi is, naturally, the main protagonist of this series. He's a very bright and cheerful half-Japanese, half-British, 13 year old middle school student from Cornwall. He is summoned to the alternate world of Flognard by Princess Millhiore to become the Biscotti Republic's "Hero." Shinku is the Japanese word for Crimson, which is most likely a reference to the opening theme to Dog Days season 1, Scarlet Knight.
Princess Millhiore Firianno Biscotti of the Biscotti Republic is the Heroine of this story. She is the one who summons Shinku from earth to Flognard in order to help her fight against the Gallete army during the war games that are taking place. Like Shinku she is only 13 years old, and also the ruler of a nation (anime logic, the younger you are the better you are at ruling others). She's very hardworking and has a kind and gentle personality. She's also absolutely adorable, with pink hair, big purple eyes, and the cutest little ears and tail you'll ever see.
The first season of this anime centers around Shinku's summons to the world of Flognard and the subsequent war games against Gallete as Rico, a tiny and adorable scientists who looks like she can't be older than 9 or 10, tries to find a way to send him back home within 16 days. The plot, while a little childish and not containing much in the way of "drama" or "tension" that anime such as Naruto, Bleach, One Piece or, heaven forbid Basilisk and Hellsing have, is still a wonderful show that manages to keep the viewers attention with the right combination of cuteness and fanservice. I would rate Dog Days Season 1 with a 8/10 and suggest anyone who has not seen it to watch it when they can.
The second season...not so much. Unfortunately, while the first season was beautifully done, the second season lacks the luster that made the first one so popular. It still contains a good deal of adorableness and ecchi fanservice, maybe even more so than the first one, but it lacks a plot and really just seems like filler episodes without there being any purpose for them. I would say that, if you enjoyed the first season, then you will probably enjoy the second one; just be prepared because it's pretty much all mindless fun and fanservices from here on out.
