Fanfiction Writing Tips

Okay, so I have decided to give you guys some tips for writing a good fanfiction. You can all thank Kitsune for the idea.

To write a good anything, whether that be fanfiction or something else, you must have three very important parts of your story already planned out: The Plot, The Setting, and The Characters.

Plot is defined as the events that make up a story, particularly as they relate to one another in a pattern, in a sequence, through cause and effect, how the reader views the story, or simply by coincidence. Basically, it is your story. What your story is about, and the events that surround the characters in your story. So if you were to write a fanfiction about Harry Potter, you would first need to determine what the key plots in your story are; is it a canon rehashing where Harry has a more Voldemort like personality? Is it about Harry Potter becoming the Bond-mate to Gabrielle or Fleur Delacour? Is your story about what happens after the war against Voldemort is won and how everyone is trying to move on with their lives? The Plot is one of the key factors you need to have before you even think about writing your story.

The Setting is the place in which your plot happens. It's fairly self-explanatory, but I'll give you some examples, just so you know exactly what I am talking about. If you're writing a Naruto fanfiction, then the Setting of your story is most likely going to be the Elemental Nations. By that same token, if you're writing Harry Potter, then the setting would likely be England. And if it's Fairy Tale, then your setting is going to be Fiore. The Setting is just as important as the Plot and is something you need to think of before writing your story.

Characters. Characters are essential to any story, because they are what the story is about. They are also what draws the reader in. When people read a story, they want to read about the characters in that story, and creating an engaging character is the key to creating an excellent story.

One thing you need to think about when making a character, especially in a fanfiction, is to ask yourself what kind of character you are looking for. Is the character some kind of 'larger then life' hero? Or are they just a regular person who finds themselves in extraordinary circumstances? Or perhaps your character is an ordinary person going through ordinary life issues?

You also need to think about their personality. What type of person are they? Are they good? Bad? Do they have a temper? Are they emotionally stunted? Or easily embarrassed? A characters personality can make or break stories faster then anything else in writing, something that you all need to think about when writing your story.

If anyone has any questions they would like me to answer specifically, please post it on this blog and I will be sure to get to it.

Stay frosty everyone!
